spacer.gif (818 bytes)Before Wilmington became the tourist mecca it is today, the Port City had always been a major commercial hub. Early centers for higher learning were accordingly of the vocational ilk, and it wasn't until the mid-1900s that institutions of broader education were established.

The southern coast's growing economy and desirable location are again attracting industry, creating the need for higher levels and greater specialization of learning as never before. Wilmington is now a true college town, being home not only to a campus of the University of North Carolina system, but also to an excellent community college, a business college, and two satellite campuses. The Topsail Island, Jacksonville, and South Brunswick areas are all served by community colleges.

Not surprisingly, the major emphases of the research performed in the area are in the fields of oceanography, wetland and estuarine studies, marine biomedical and environmental physiology, and marine biotechnology and aquaculture.
