spacer.gif (818 bytes)The number of hotel and motel accommodations in Wilmington has taken a dramatic leap, with new units being built at a record rate, particularly in the area surrounding the intersections of S. College Road, Market Street and New Centre Drive. But even though resort hotels, efficiency apartments and simple motel lodgings truly abound, don't count on coming to town without a reservation if you're traveling on holiday weekends -- even Valentine's Day!

Full-service resort and business hotels are strategically located in desirable areas such as Wilmington's riverfront and Wrightsville Beach. In smaller towns such as Surf City, Carolina Beach, Yaupon Beach and others, lower-priced oceanfront motels are more common. In Wilmington, the motel strip is Market Street west of College Road, with some overflow onto College Road itself.

You can find motels of every price range there, from the budget Motel 6 to the pricier Ramada Inn. Carolina Beach teems with small, family-run motels concentrated within a small area -- no fewer than 15 line Carolina Beach Avenue N. within a half-mile of Harper Avenue. In general, beach motels, especially the older ones, are known for their great locations rather than their stylish decor.

There are no hotels or motels on Bald Head Island. Daily accommodations are limited to one large bed and breakfast inn (see our Bed and Breakfast Inns chapter). Some rental homes are available for stays as short as a weekend (see our Weekly and Long-Term Cottage Rentals chapter).

We've listed here a cross-section of accommodations -- inexpensive and expensive, elegant and downscale, busy and peaceful. Of course there are many others, but the ones here all share the kind of quality we feel comfortable recommending to our own friends and family.

Price Code

Since prices are subject to change without notice, we provide only price guidelines based on double-occupancy per night during the summer ("high" season). Guidelines do not reflect the 6 percent state and 3 percent local taxes. Most establishments offer lower rates during the off-season, but always confirm rates and necessary amenities before reserving. It may also pay to inquire about corporate, senior citizen or long-term discounts even when such discounts are not mentioned in our descriptions. Most establishments accept major credit cards, but personal checks tend to be accepted only when making payment well in advance.
