spacer.gif (818 bytes)Wilmington's media scene largely remains the same year after year in terms of staying power. Owners may come and go, but the area's dominant newspapers, magazines, and radio and television stations are stable sources of information.

In the print medium, visitors will notice an abundance of tourist-oriented publications in street racks. We haven't listed them here, but they are generally handy guides to the area's attractions. Some of them have been around for years while others seem to drift in one day and out the next. There's a robust business in publications on real estate; in fact, these magazines or booklets are so pervasive you can't go anywhere without encountering them.

Choices for radio listening are eclectic, ranging across talk, country music, beach music, urban contemporary, Top 40 and the diverse offerings of the city's own National Public Radio affiliate. There's a general feeling that other successful formats could be added to those already on the air, but surely time will change this situation to satisfy everyone.

Television is a somewhat limited medium unless one has cable or satellite services, in which case the whole spectrum of channels becomes available. TV 26 changed affiliation from CBS to Fox several years ago and, at this writing, it's difficult to get a clear picture of CBS transmission without cable. Public Television, broadcast from Jacksonville by way of Chapel Hill, has a strong signal.

The media listed below have settled into their own niches on what seems to be a permanent basis. In a volatile industry, these information/entertainment outlets have proven themselves over time.
